Medical care in Beijing for international patients
Beijing started an international medical initiative in 2019 with seven participating hospitals. Press reports put the number at around 20 today. This page grows as we verify hospitals one by one.
Hospital profiles in Beijing
No hospital has confirmed its details with us yet, so no profile is published here.
We have not yet verified any Beijing hospital. If you are planning care in Beijing now, you can still send us an enquiry and we will tell you honestly what we know and what we do not. See the hospital index for other cities.
What to expect
Large public hospitals in Beijing often run an international department alongside their main outpatient service. Caixin visited the international department of Peking University People's Hospital in January 2026 and reported that most of the patients there were Chinese nationals. That is a reminder that these departments serve local patients too, and are not only for visitors.
Beijing is also one of the nine trial areas for fully foreign-owned hospitals.

Setting expectations
An international department in Beijing is not a separate hospital. It shares specialists, laboratories and imaging with the main hospital, and it serves local patients who want a different level of service as well as visitors. That is useful: you get access to the same specialists. It also means waiting times and availability depend on the main hospital's schedule. Ask how far ahead the specialist you need is booked, and whether a different doctor in the same department could see you sooner.
Time to allow
Beijing traffic and the distance from either airport make arrival day a poor day for appointments. Plan your first appointment for the day after you land, and keep a spare day before your flight home in case results take longer.
Getting there
Because the two airports are far apart, check which one your flight uses before booking a hotel near a hospital. Allow for traffic on arrival day.
What we are checking
- Which hospitals in the programme accept direct bookings from abroad.
- Languages offered in each international department.
- Published prices for checkups and imaging.
In the meantime, compare Shanghai and Shenzhen, check traceable prices, and read how to prepare for a visit.
Planning a Beijing trip, step by step
- Start with the hospital. Until we publish Beijing profiles, ask any hospital you are considering whether it takes part in the city's international medical programme.
- Match the airport to the hospital. Capital and Daxing are on opposite sides of the city; the wrong choice can add hours to arrival day.
- Confirm your visa route. Treatment is not a listed visa-free purpose.
- Prepare documents. Passport, appointment confirmation, translated records if requested, insurance letters.
- Plan for follow-up. Ask how results reach you after you leave Beijing.
