Medical care in Shenzhen for international patients

For many visitors Shenzhen is the easiest mainland city to reach: you can fly into Hong Kong and cross the border by land.

Guangdong's pilot hospitals

In March 2026 Guangdong named its first international medical service pilot hospitals, four of them in Shenzhen. We are checking which of these accept patients from abroad directly.

Demand is moving. Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital, which opened in August 2024, told Caixin that foreign patient visits in January 2026 were 130% above its monthly average since opening. Shenzhen is also one of the nine trial areas for fully foreign-owned hospitals.

For a single consultation, staying in Hong Kong can work. For tests over several days, or anything needing an early start, staying near the hospital is usually simpler.

Language in Shenzhen hospitals

Mandarin is the working language in Shenzhen hospitals, and many staff and patients also speak Cantonese. English support depends on the hospital and department. Ask which languages your doctor uses before you book, rather than assuming that proximity to Hong Kong means English is available.

Crossing from Hong Kong

Many patients fly to Hong Kong and cross at a land port. Allow time for the crossing on appointment days, and keep your passport with you: hospitals use it for registration. Read what to bring.

What we are checking

  • Which of the four pilot hospitals accept bookings from abroad.
  • Languages offered, including Cantonese and English.
  • Insurance direct billing arrangements.

Compare with Shanghai and Beijing, and see which kinds of care fit a short trip.

Planning a Shenzhen trip, step by step

  1. Decide where to stay. Some patients stay in Hong Kong and cross for appointments; others stay near the hospital to avoid daily crossings.
  2. Check the land port. Make sure your entry permission covers the crossing you will use, and allow time on appointment days.
  3. Ask about language. Cantonese and Mandarin are both used in Shenzhen; ask which languages the doctor uses.
  4. Set up payment. Mobile wallets linked to a foreign card are the simplest option.
  5. Keep your passport with you. You need it at the border and at hospital registration.
